Headline: What's Out There: Prince

Gretings & Salutations!

I've been checking out a lot of new (to me) music lately -- especially, for some reason, live performances on TV or DVD. Some of it has been great and inspiring, some not-so-much, but all of it has been interesting. We'll start by getting reacquainted with Prince.

Now, it's not that I don't like Prince. I do. I respect his considerable and diverse talents, and as a first-generation Mtv kid, at least part of the soundtrack to my life is formed by his music. I just don't get Prince. I don't get the weird, obsessive Cult Of Personality that has grown up around him (which of course leads into my not getting the weird, obsessive iconography in pop music in general, but that's another discussion for another time.) It doesn't seem to have a lot to do with music. And though I enjoyed his earlier tunes, and still do, musically he lost me somewhere around 1993. So, it's been a long time since I really got anything of value out of Prince.

That being said, I saw his performance of "Fury" on Saturday Night Live a couple of weeks ago, and was completely blown away. Yeah, I'm a Rock'N'Roll guy at the core, and a sucker for a great guitar performance, so he had me from the opening notes. But I also just really liked the way the guy carried himself here. Tight, energetic, utterly confident showmanship which teetered on the edge of arrogance but never quite tipped over. And it was also the catchiest song I'd heard from him in years.

But don't take my word for it...check it out for yourself.
